The 1965 Mustang won the Tiffany Gold Medal for excellence in American design, the first automobile ever to do so.

The Mustang was on the Car and Driver Ten Best list in 1983, 1987, 1988, 2005, and 2006. It won the Motor Trend Car of the Year award in 1974 and 1994.

The Mustang made its first public appearance at a track just over a month after its introduction on April 17, as pace car for 1964 Indianapolis 500.

The same year, Mustangs made the first of many notable successes in competition, winning first and second in the class in the Tour de France rally international. American racing debut in the car, also in 1964, was in endurance racing, where individuals and teams dealer sponsored campaign Mustangs powered by 427 cu. in. V8.

In late 1964, Ford hired Holman & Moody to prepare ten 427-powered Mustangs to contest (the National Hot Rod Association NHRA) A / Factory Experimental class in the 1965 drag racing season. Five of these special Mustangs made their debut in the competition at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified in the Factory Stock Eliminator class. The car driven by Bill Lawton won the class.

A decade later, Bob Glidden won the first NHRA Pro Stock Mustang title.

The basis for V6 Mustangs remains unchanged, while the Mustang GT 4.6 L V8, has been revised specifications similar to the 2008-2009 Bullitt Mustang 4.6 L V8, resulting in 315 hp (235 kW ) @ 6000 rpm and 325 lbs ft (441 N m) of torque @ 4250 rpm. Other mechanical characteristics for the 2010 Mustang to include new spring rates and shock absorbers to improve the quality of travel and control, standard traction control and stability control system on all models, and new wheel sizes .

For the Mustang GT, two sets of action were available. Other new features and options for the 2010 Ford Mustang include SYNC, dual zone automatic climate control, an updated navigation system with Sirius Travel Link, a Capless fuel tank, and a camera system for reverse help to reverse.

The 2010 Mustang was released in spring 2009.
